Kuopio Cathedral (Kuopion Tuomiokirkko in Finnish) is located right in the heart of the city of Kuopio, in Northern Savonia. The beautiful church was built between 1805-1815. This church and the Snellman Park (Snellmanin puisto in Finnish) right next to it are well worth a visit when you are in Kuopio.
Taipale Canal in Varkaus dates back to 1840. It connects lakes Unnukka and Heinävesi, which are part of Lake Saimaa. The height difference of the upper and lower side is about five metres, so it is quite impressive to watch the canal in action. The current canal was built in 1867-1871. The old canal from 1840 is now a museum area.
Built in 1916 to protect Helsinki from a possible attack from the sea, the Skatanniemi fortifications are an interesting part of Finland’s history.
Some people are fishing, some are having picnic, some are just relaxing and enjoying the scenery. The summer evening at the Vanhankapunginkoski seems almost epic.
